Wall Street Journal: Assad’s Fall Is a Chance to Back the Kurds


They are among the few allies who share American values, and they know how to win.

We created Justice for Kurds in 2018, after Turkey’s attack on the Syrian region of Afrin, to defend and pay tribute to one of the West’s most loyal friends. The Kurds are among the few peoples in the region with whom America shares not only common interests but common values—and even fewer that can be counted on to be valorous when times are toughest. With the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria, it’s time for America to show up for them.

Reinstating vigorous American support to the Kurds of Syria and Iraq wouldn’t require more American boots on the ground. Given the right assistance, the Kurds already know how to fight—and win. They served as the tip of the spear in our common fight against ISIS—a brutal struggle that cost the Kurds more than 11,000 dead and 34,000 wounded, while fewer than a dozen American servicemen were killed. This noble and ancient people was then abandoned. Regime change in Damascus has created a rare opportunity to honor our debt and make good on the moral obligation to secure the Syrian Kurds’ future.
