ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Security sources said Saturday that ISIS launched a hit-and-run attack on several fishermen in Iraq’s western Anbar province, causing several casualties.
Using light weapons, ISIS militants attacked a fishing party near Haditha Dam late on Friday, a security source told Kurdistan 24.
Four fishermen were killed, the source said, adding that the terrorists surrounded the party and shot them in cold blood, killing them on the spot.
Other sources said another five people were wounded in the Zarka area in the village of Sukran.
The mayor of Haditha district, Mabrouk al-Jughiafi, said that some of the injured were in critical condition in the general hospital’s intensive care unit.
Officials have previously warned that ISIS activity is growing in many areas in Salahuddin, Kirkuk, Anbar, and Nineveh provinces, mainly in remote parts of areas disputed between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the federal government.
Despite the declaration of victory over the group in 2017, ISIS remains a major concern in those areas especially for the public as militants have adopted hit-and-run tactics, and carry out executions and kidnappings in the area.
