Russian Military Police: we are in NE Syria to protect the people

A general of the Russian Military Police working in Syria told reporters today that their presence in Northeast Syria is to “protect the local population”.

The commander hold a joint press conference with the Military Council of Kobani which is under imminent danger of Turkish attack after threats from Turkish president Recep Tayib Erdogan.

“The priority for the Russian military leadership is to secure the people of this region and all Syria.” Said the Russian commander.

Adding that Russian commanders are searching with the Kurdish administration the ways to provide humanitarian aid.

The co-chair of Kobani Military Council said that the goal of their meeting is to “protect Northeast Syria, and the entire country, especially after the attacks of Turkey and its mercenaries on the region, which resulted in casualties among civilians, women and children, and the displacement of the people from Sere Kaniye to Tal Abyad.”

Syrian Kurds have faced alone the dangers of ethnical cleansing brought to them by the Turkish army and Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army who started a full scale military operation few days after the withdrawal of the American troops who used to patrol the border between Turkey and Kurdish regions of Syria controlled by Syrian Democratic Forces.

Many view this withdrawal as a betrayal to the Kurds who trusted the United States as a guarantor for the “Security Mechanism” agreement with Turkey which obliged the SDF to destroy their defense lines and trenches.

Today, Russia is conducting joint patrols with the Turkish army in the areas east to Sere Kaniye and west to Tal Abyad, and have controlled lately the American base in Sareen (South to Kobani).
